The Spirit of Christmas

Did you notice in the picture above that Santa seems a little shocked? He just found out that he was a spiritual being. Yeah, no kidding! But, did you know you are a spiritually being? Alright, before you get all shook up about it. Let me explain.

Dallas Willard, the author of the book, Divine Conspiracy, had a favorite quote:

“You are an unceasing spiritual being with an eternal destiny in God’s great universe.”

Okay, so I hear you saying, “So what does that even have to do with Christmas?” Well, according to the Bible in the verse John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Also, it should be noted in verse Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Based on the two verses stated above, we can conclude that as humankind we are created by God in the image of God who is a spiritual being. If God is a spiritual being, then as image bearers of God, we are also spiritual beings. So, there are two realities in God’s creation – the spiritual world and the physical world. The reality is God has His fingerprints all over both worlds. More specifically, He has His fingerprints all over you – metaphorically speaking as God the Father doesn’t actually have fingers.

But, this is where Christmas fits in. It’s all about the merging of the spiritual world with the physical world. If you don’t know the story about Jesus’ birth, you can get a taste of it in my previous year’s Christmas letter. Now God wants us (as in everyone that is conceived in this world) to be with Him. Why? Because God takes great pride in His creations so He has a plan. As being God and all, He knew of you before the foundation of the world and He chose you to be with Him for eternity. Yet, there is one caveat, God also granted you “free will.” This means you have the ability to do whatever you want to in this life which includes dishing on God, the Creator, if you so choose. He gives you that choice. Not demanding that you worship Him on this earth, but allows you to choose Him or choose something else to replace Him with. The choice is yours to make during your time here on earth.

Christmas is about the plan God has designed for humanity to draw near to God. That’s God’s plan for you. When you have passed from this physical life on earth to your eternal destiny beyond, whether you chose to worship God on this earth will determine where you will spend your eternity – an eternity with God or without God. The decision is up to you. My prayer is that you choose God.

Either way, God still loves you and why not. He made you. So, if you are like Santa, kind of shocked about this information. Don’t feel bad about it, but search your heart and actually ponder the decision you make as it will affect your eternal destiny.

My prayer for you is that the Spirit of Christmas will lead you to a decision that worships the only One True God. Amen.
