“Beauty is not caused. It is.” — Emily Dickinson
Last night, my wife treated me to a night with our local symphony and orchestra. It was an amazing performance. Normally, I don’t listen to classical music, but this performance was different. The performance was musical numbers based on the “Star Wars” movies, which I am a fan of. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the evening as an individual, I was really moved by watching the surrounding people in the auditorium who were also intrigued by the music.
It was a beautiful moment.
Children were dressed in their favorite Star Wars costumes as well as a few adults — people who grew up with Star Wars movies well as those who are just getting their feet wet. But what stirred my soul was the fact that all ages, all races, all genders, all faiths were in the same room enjoying the beauty of it all. And for a moment, I felt that all was right with the world. No shootings, no wars, no arguments, no worries, just beauty. Taking it all in was like basking in the warmth of the sun on a nice spring day.
You know, sometimes God just gets a bad rap. What I mean is this. Whenever something goes wrong, God is the culprit. Like every time something goes bad, the index finger points to God. Yet, when something goes right, we say, “Boy, Look at me. I made that happen.” This begs the question, “Who created this beauty?” In all reality, God created beauty. God created everything to be good and beautiful. Beauty allows us to sit with our favorite humans in a nice auditorium and bask in the experience of the sound of music and it is a wonder — a marvelous sight to behold. The Creator of all beauty made this music possible for us to enjoy. He developed the creativity of the composer who wrote the music as well as formed the ears for us to enjoy it.
So whether you believe in the One True God or not, Beauty, in and of itself, undeniably proclaims the existence of a good and beautiful God. By the way, if you seek this Beauty, the One True God will be found. In fact, God wants to be found by you. And the feeling that all is right with the world will flood the capacity of your soul as you declare, “It is well with my soul!”
Psalm 27:4
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
