A few nights ago, my wife and I were watching a romantic comedy. In the movie, the daughter was dealing with the divorce of her parents, and she wanted her father to tell her how he ended up marrying her mother. So the father told her, “It’s complicated.” But she persisted and her dad gave in. As the story goes, there were three prominent women at different stages in his life posing as love interests.
He pursued a relationship with each of them. In an especially hard time in the dad’s life, he told his prospective girlfriend that he loved her. He was drunk at the time, and his life was in turmoil. She told him that he was too messed up. She said, “You need to get it together.” This may be good advice when dealing with the imperfections of human relationships but not so with God.
God deals with us in a different manner. God says come to me, you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. He loves you just as you are. You don’t need to get your affairs in order for Him. He forgives all your wrongs. In fact, you can never stand alone and be in the holy presence of God. It’s impossible. It’s only possible by being clothed in the righteousness of our Savior. To fully experience the love of the Almighty God, you need to give it all up. Your entire being – all of your soul, body and mind – and surrender them at the foot of the cross where our imperfections are forgiven. Here you will experience “True Love.”
