“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato
The audience eagerly anticipates the night. All dressed in their best formal attire, they wait in an elaborately decorated auditorium for the cellist to begin his repertoire. Not an empty seat in the house, he takes position in the front and center stage. The crowd erupts in applause, and he begins to play his cello. Not a sound is heard from the audience. Only the sound of his cello, a sound that mesmerizes the auditorium providing a peace to all who heard. Like the peace when flying 30,000 feet above the world and observing all is at rest.
What consists of a cello? A bit of wood glued together with some strings attached. In and of itself, it can do nothing. It is dead. Only when played by the master, does it come to life. It comes to life not just for the master but to all who are in the vicinity of its music. It can speak of love, joy, peace and can express remorse and pain – all with the same instrument. The master yields his will on the instrument but not in a harsh manner. The master and cello become one, working together to bring harmony – to bring life to those who choose to listen.
This is a picture of how my God works in the lives of His children. For He states in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” The Master calls to you to be part of His family. Yet He requests one thing, a total surrender to His will – repentance for the sin in your life and a willingness to let Him breathe life to your soul. For Plato was wrong, it is God who gives a soul to the universe and gives life to everything. God wants you to live in harmony with Him so you can experience first hand the true music that resonates life. He calls out to you, “He who has ears, let him hear.” I pray you choose to listen.
I was inspired to write this blog based on listening to Yo-Yo Ma, a phenomenal cellist. Below is a piece that he performed.
