As The Sun Rises: A Christmas Devotional

“Light has come into the world, but people love darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”

– John 3:19

In the Bible, good and evil is constantly contrasted, notated as light versus darkness. Jesus states in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Mankind is in need of a rescuer to bring us out of the darkness.

This is where the meaning of Christmas shines — the provision of a rescuer.

Imagine this:  you are stranded in the middle of the ocean where no land is in sight. The water is wanting to take you down. There is absolutely no way you can save yourself. You struggle to keep your head above the water.  It is just a matter of minutes before you are consumed by the waves. You pray to God for deliverance. At the moment, the Coast Guard helicopter lowers a basket down to pull you from the water.

Darkness is like the ocean. You can’t overcome it on your own strength. You need a rescuer to pull you from it. You need someone from above who has overcome the darkness. More accurately, you were born into the darkness with no capability to see the light. But God, in His ever-abounding mercy sent us a rescuer, a Savior, who was and is pure light. His name is Jesus, translated “He Saves.” Jesus was and is God, and He took on human form two thousand years ago in a mission for the battle of our souls. Our souls are lost in darkness with no hope of seeing the light but that all changed when Jesus arrived on the earth that Christmas Day. Scripture says He is the light of men to bring the life — not to barely survive but to experience life to its utmost fullest measure.

If you are treading water in the vast darkness of this world, ask for the rescuer, and He will extend out His hand to pull you out of the despair of this world.  When you come out of the darkness, Jesus will appear to you as the Rising Sun from heaven.  To shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. (Luke 1:78-79) He not only saves us but leads us on a journey to our eternal home to be with Him forevermore.

Now that’s worth celebrating.  Let’s celebrate the True Light of the World this Christmas.

May the Light of Jesus Christ shine through your life.

There is a song that I recently heard from CityAlight called, “There is One Gospel,” and I felt the lyrics depict the storyline above well.
