Have you noticed? The world is changing, becoming more divisive. It doesn’t seem like staying neutral on the world’s hot topics is possible. Below is a clip from the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” in which a discussion takes place about taking sides with God or the devil or just being “unaffiliated.”
The movie revolves around three criminals named Everett, Pete, and Delmar who escaped custody and are in search of a hidden treasure. The scene shows Everett driving the car in route to find the hidden treasure with Pete and Delmar, and they pick up Tommy, who is hitching a ride.
Take a moment to watch the clip (*warning* there is some cursing in the scene):
Delmar and Pete were baptized before you see them get in the car. Meanwhile, Tommy sold his soul to the devil so he could play the guitar real good. That leaves Everett, who says he is the only one who is unaffiliated.
What does God think about being unaffiliated?
Let’s look at Revelation 3:15-17:
“ I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”
These words were spoken by Jesus in a vision to John who wrote the book of Revelation. Jesus addressed this warning to the church in Sardis. I believe it also applies to people today who are neither hot nor cold for Jesus – just unaffiliated.
Based on Revelation 3, if God was taking a census of the people of earth about knowing Him, I think it would look like this:
| Options | Check One |
| Hot | |
| Cold | |
| Unaffiliated | N/A |
God doesn’t leave room for neutrality. He demands a response from us when the time comes for us to give an account for our lives. Whatever our response is to God, know that our time here is short. We need to make it count.
