The Joy of a Russian Blue

Bella is a Russian Blue kitten that my wife and I are in temporary care of until our daughter can take her. She currently lives in a dormitory room and can’t house a pet.  We enjoy taking care of Bella.  She brings some life to our house, and we are constantly asking each other, “Where is Bella?”

Here is a Bella life moment.  A moment of joy, at least to me. We have an ice maker in our refrigerator.  Once in a while an ice cube will drop onto the floor and miss the glass (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not).  So, the ice cube hits the floor with a resounding thud.  When Bella is near the kitchen, she can hear that thud and comes a-running. She loves to bat that ice cube across the hardwood floor and play with it as a hockey puck.  Across from the refrigerator is our kitchen sink cupboards, approximately 8 feet away in distance. Bella scoots that hockey puck all the way to the kitchen sink. One time, she was running full blast and hit smack dab into those kitchen cupboards.  It was one of those, “That’s gotta hurt.”

Immediately, I seized the moment and took Bella aside.  I said, “Bella, didn’t you study Newton’s laws of motion? Don’t you know you can’t stop on a dime?” But it really didn’t go over too well because she just wanted play with her mouse toy. Okay, so I didn’t explain the laws of motion to Bella. Why? Because she’s a cat.  She just wouldn’t get it.

I have heard some people say God is going to explain the reasons for the pain in our lives.  Maybe God will lay out His reasoning of the pain we have gone through and will go through on this earth.  I don’t know, but what if we can’t comprehend His plan?  What if God’s reasoning is so over our heads that we just won’t get it?

Bella is a smart cat as far as cats go, but she doesn’t understand the real world outside of our house.  We don’t let her outside for her protection.  Bella loves wet food and lets us know when it is time to eat.  She loves our company and will follow us around the house and trusts us implicitly.  Bella loves fun. She has more toys out on the floor then when our kids were little.

Maybe in the scope of the universe, we are a little like Bella.  We get hurt but don’t know exactly why.  We trust God to work out the details of our lives with the assumption that we are totally in His Hands.  If we are lucky, God might provide us some things for our entertainment.  But even so, God provides us with family and friends to help us cope with the struggles faced on this side of the earth.  There is a whole lot of hurt in this world caused by the sin passed down from Adam and Eve, which is why Jesus came to save us from our sins so that we will be able to live in God’s House forever.  We really have no control in this life, and we need to trust God, who is able to take care of us because His ways and His thoughts are higher than our own.  In the later part of Jesus’ ministry, He explained that when He would ascend to heaven that He would provide us the Holy Spirit, also known as the Comforter.  Maybe the pain here on earth cannot be explained, but God does provide us the Comforter to ease the pain.

So … is life lived better on this earth not knowing the whys of the events we encounter?

I will say this, “Life is better with Bella, my Russian Blue,” and you know what? God says, “Life is better with you, too.”

Isaiah 55:9, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
